They named their settlement Medhelanon, which translates to "middle plain" in the Gaulish language. The city's strategic location on the trade routes between Northern Italy and the Mediterranean Sea made it an attractive target for expansion. In 222 BC, the Romans conquered Medhelanon, renaming it Mediolanum.
Medieval Renaissance and the Rise of the Visconti

The city's layout was carefully planned, with broad streets and aqueducts, and it boasted impressive structures like the Roman amphitheater and the basilica of San Lorenzo. In the 13th century, the powerful Visconti family emerged as Milan's rulers. The Unification of Italy
The Duchy of Milan was not incorporated into the Republic of Italy until 1861. The duchy had been a separate state for centuries, and it was not until the Italian unification movement in the mid-19th century that it was finally brought under the control of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which later became the Kingdom of Italy. The Battle of Solferino in 1859 was a decisive victory for the Kingdom of Sardinia, and it paved the way for the unification of Italy. In 1861, the Kingdom of Italy was officially proclaimed, and the Duchy of Milan became part of the new nation.
